"To develop and deliver quality, innovative educational programs to veterinarians, livestock/poultry producers, agribusiness professionals, and those impacted by animal agriculture. These programs will emphasize animal health, veterinary public health, animal productivity and sustainability, food safety, and animal well-being."
Veterinary Science Outreach
Veterinary Science Outreach incorporates animal diagnostics, on-farm field investigations, applied research, and Cooperative Extension to serve Pennsylvania‘s agricultural community by improving animal health and well-being, farm profitability and product quality.
Our personnel are comprised of veterinarians, technicians and students, who, in addition to providing veterinary Outreach services, conduct basic research. Veterinarians are also active Penn State faculty members and instruct courses applicable to the veterinary sciences.
The Animal Diagnostic Laboratory, part of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System, is a nationally recognized veterinary diagnostic laboratory committed to the health of animals. With a staff of veterinarians and specialists in areas such as preventative medicine, microbiology, pathology, avian medicine and virology, the laboratory serves as a central reference facility for approximately 1,200 veterinarians and animal owners.
Field Investigation, is an integral part of both the Penn State Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostics. As such, the group works closely with all three units of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS), the field investigation group at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, and with Penn State Cooperative Extension.
Field Investigation activities consist of two basic areas - “Problem-Solving” and “Directed Field Studies”. Veterinarians from the field studies group will respond to requests for assistance from livestock and poultry producers, veterinarians, county agents, and other agricultural entities. They will provide problem-solving assistance, including where applicable, visits to herds and flocks in Pennsylvania. For selected diseases or conditions, directed field studies and/or applied research will proactively seek new information to categorize and quantitate, or elicit control or management strategies.
Veterinary Cooperative Extension provides educational programs and materials to those interested in animal agriculture. Our audiences typically include producers, Ag industry professionals, and veterinarians. Continuing Education for veterinarians is an integral part of our educational programming.
