Primary Investigator:
Dr. Bhushan Jayarao

Contributing Investigators:
David Wolfgang, Ernest Hovingh, Robert Van Saun, John Comerford, Paul Patterson, Kenneth Kephart, Robert Weaver, Mike Hulet

Project Description:
Survey and analyze current antibiotic usage in livestock operations and propose strategies for prudent use of antibiotics based on the findings of the study.

Objectives:
Develop and beta-test survey instruments (questionnaires) for collecting information on antibiotic use (type, quantity of antibiotic and why it is used) on livestock operations. Survey livestock operations including dairy, beef, sheep, goats, layers, broilers, turkey, veal and swine for antibiotic usage. Conduct descriptive and analytical data analyses to: a) estimate the type and quantity of antibiotics used, and b) identify "critical" factors that are associated with the use of antibiotics. Propose "practical" strategies for prudent use of antibiotics in livestock operations based on the findings of the study.
