Antibiotics have been used for decades to improve the health and welfare of society as well as animals. This short presentation will review a few of the controversial issues surrounding the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.
As with many broad health issues there are strong opinions about their use in production agriculture. Some cast the use of antibiotics in animals as a disaster for human health, while other argue strongly that their use in agriculture is good for animals as well as people.
Topics discussed will include: development of resistance strains of bacteria, economic impacts and profitability, bacteria of food safety concern, and animal health and well-being.
