Adjusting bacteria in intestines may lead to obesity treatments

A drug that appears to target specific intestinal bacteria in the guts of mice may create a chain reaction that could eventually lead to new treatments for obesity and diabetes in humans, according to a team of researchers.
Dr. Eric Harvill Invited to Serve as Member of NIH Genetic Variation and Evolution Study Section

The addition of Dr. Eric Harvill to the National Institute of Health (NIH) study section Genetic Variation and Evolution will allow him an opportunity to influence the quality and type of research funded by the NIH. Dr. Harvill already has served on five other study sections in the past and joins at least ten other VBS faculty members who also have served on various study sections.
Walter Jackson III, Ph.D. Candidate in IID, Received Award for Innovative Research

The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences (VBS) Department and Huck Institutes’ Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IID) Program are proud to announce that doctoral candidate Walter Jackson III has received the 2013 Robert T. Simpson Graduate Award for Innovative Research. The Robert T. Simpson Graduate Award honors the legacy of renowned Penn State faculty member, Dr. Simpson, who passed away in 2004.
Emily Finch Selected for Career Development Award from Penn State’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute

An Immunology and Infectious Disease doctoral candidate, Emily Finch, has been selected to receive a Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) TL1 career development award. She will use this award to determine the feasibility of Omega-3 supplementation as a treatment for leukemia.

Ag Alumni Society Honors Dr. Robert J. Van Saun with 2013 Excellence in Academic Advising Award

Dr. Van Saun, Professor and Advisor in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences (VBS) at Penn State, was presented with the 2013 Excellence in Academic Advising Award on May 4th, 2013. Colleagues, Drs. Nuket Acar and Lester C. Griel, asserted that nominating Dr. Van Saun was the right decision. His enthusiasm, hard work, and expertise encourage each student he advises to think beyond the classroom or laboratory to make a better world.
IID Graduate, Mike Henry, Awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program Scholarship

Mike Henry, a Shreyer Scholar and recent IID graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship. He will be working in Africa for the next year as a Fulbrighter prior to attending medical school at Columbia.
