Current Diagnostic Activities

  • Providing supervision for daily operation of the avian virology section at Wiley laboratory
  • Training laboratory staff and new personnel on diagnostic virology techniques
  • Conducting isolation of various avian viruses in embryonating chicken eggs and cell  cultures, and virus detection and identification by FA/IFA, AGID, HA/HI tests, various immunoassays, molecular and monoclonal antibody-based assays, and other diagnostic tests
  • Coordinating Pennsylvania avian influenza surveillance program and conducting real-time RT-PCR for detecting AIV, H5 and H7 subtypes, paramyxovirus type 1 (PMV-1/NDV), and variant NDV
  • Providing case coordination for submissions of avian virology cases
  • Developing new diagnostic tests and SOPs
  • Manager of Wiley biocontainment facility to support diagnostic research and disease investigations

Research Interests

Animal Diagnostic Laboratory Research Faculty
  • Development and production of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against specific avian viral proteins (AIV H7, H5 N2 mAbs are made successful) for avian diagnostic assay development
  • Development of molecular and mAb-based diagnostic assays for various avian viruses, including:
    • Longitudinal studies of a Novel Dot-ELISA for detection of avian influenza virus (AIV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and other avian viruses
    • Multiplex RT-PCR for Avian Respiratory RNA Viruses as AIV, Newcastle disease virus (NDV), IBV and avian pneumovirus (APV); IBV S1 gene sequencing characterization
    • Real-time PCR for avian enteric viruses including fowl adenovirus (FAV), avian reovirus and rotavirus, turkey coronavirus and astrovirus, turkey/pheasant hemorrhagic enteritis virus (HEV), duck viral enteritis (DVE) virus, duck or goose parvovirus
    • Avian reovirus (ARV) genotyping by sequencing sigma-C genes, ARV full genomic sequencing characterization, ARV serotyping and pathogenicity characterizations
  • Pathogenicity and vaccine challenge studies on new virus strains/variants of field isolates
  • Development studies on Nanotechnology-based biosensor assays for rapid detection of AIV and other important avian viruses

International Consultant and Collaboration

  • International Consultant/Expert for diagnostics and control of highly pathogenic ("high path") Avian Influenza for the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and USAID Programs in Southeast Asian and Mideast countries
