Jamie Bernard, an assistant professor in pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, has found that a certain protein released from fat in the body can cause a non-cancerous cell to turn into a cancerous one. She also found that abdominal fat is the more likely culprit.

“My research as an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University focuses on the inter-relationship between adiposity and cancer development/progression. I hope to open entirely new avenues of investigation in nutritional carcinogenesis and toxicology, particularly with regard to the inter-relationship of obesity, metabolic syndrome and cancer (a topic of growing urgency in Western countries)”.
